about

This summer I was studying Laraaji's music, specifically Ambient #3 A Day Of Radiance. Many years ago, I saw him perform this material at Leo Wiser's Occult Book Store in New York City. I believe it was in 1980. I was amazed and deeply impressed as he sat there in the middle of the floor, with two zithers mic'd into several guitar stomp boxes and a small amplifier. He was in a state of meditation inside his instrument, both acoustic and electronic. This later resonated with me in 1985 when I was introduced to the works of the zen master Watazumido - Shuso. Watazumi had a similar process only with his hocchiko shakuhachi flute.
So, here, some 40 years later, I am approaching the sounds of Laraaji, only from my own meditative, if electronic, angle. This is more than a simple homage, as my machine based approach is, in some important ways, quite alien to Laraaji's practice.
I played much of the note data - some was developed with MIDI processors either in conjunction with or as a processor of manually played data on my keyboard. These studies use a plethora of effects, in order to create this record's unique atmosphere.
Previously, as with my Quintessence series, I took a more post-modernist approach of appropriation and The Ready-Made. In other works, I have explored and interpreted a variety of compositions by others - Brian Eno (Discrete Music), Terry Riley (In C), Rapoon (Raising Earthly Spirits), to name just a few, and investigated their musical languages to make other expressions by expanding their musical vocabulary. Often this found results that are quite at variance to the original. So too, with this music of Laraaji. It may "sound like" Laraaji, but it's really something else altogether.
I hope you enjoy these meditative studies as much as I enjoyed making them.
