about

“Something Old + Something New” is the second in a trilogy of records reflecting Henry’s recent creative research. A long time in the making, this record spans 30 years of music. The earliest known recordings by Henry are here. He recorded them and gave a cassette copy to an ex-girlfriend. His copies were lost. Decades later, she contacted him and said she still had the cassette. She sent it back to him, and six of the songs form the “Something Old” portion of the record. It is easy to hear continuity between these songs and Henry’s first release, “Electronic Etudes” from 1987. One of these old songs is the only song with lyrics Henry’s ever made; “The Letter” which is a bittersweet song of a broken romance.

Three new songs form the “Something New” portion of the record, and were all composed in 2013 and 2014. These grew out of the ideas from the previous record, “Something Borrowed” which was composed of appropriated sounds that were highly processed into new sounds. Something New is also composed of appropriated material, however, it operates at a higher level of abstraction. Where Something Borrowed processed the actual audio data of a number of songs and sound sources, each piece of Something New is a processing of a specific piece of music. However, the processing is not based on the audio data itself, but on interpretations of the audio data that results in extractions and interpolations – a creativity by interpretive software. This data is then turned into MIDI data and triggers sounds of Henry’s choosing and design - essentially, a Re-Composition. The results are lush, dreamlike and profound.
